Over the Wall

Hi Dalton!

I just wanted to say hi, post something instead of nothing.

So often I think about John F. Kennedy's speech about aiming towards the US's moon landing, where he mentions the idiom "throwing ones hat over the wall." He describes young kids encountering a tall wall, difficult to climb, but holding orchards ripe for adventure beyond. These kids would throw their caps over the tall wall, forcing themselves to commit to climbing to retrieve their hats and find themselves over the aforementioned obstacle. Kennedy used this metaphor to communicate to Americans that the country was committed to their race to the moon, and that the states had "no choice but to follow" their ambition.

I always think about this, and the ways that we can restrain ourselves to making just one step towards a goal through tricks and traps. I saw someone say that in order to pick up running as a hobby, they had to get over the obstacle of washing workout clothes; their solution was to wash clothes with them in the shower, so that the clothes was easily ready for another workout the next day. All these deranged traps pull us forward like grueling pulleys, one tug at a time pulling us forward. In the case of me reaching my own goals, I might be fighting those tugs forward kicking and screaming, but I have "no choice but to follow" the path ahead.

Today, I just threw my hat over the wall and committed to reaching out to you here. I was only going to send a sentence, but after grueling over scaling that towering wall, the orchard is only so much sweeter.

Miss you lots,

Sabi
